The government has requested a two-week period to respond to a question raised in Parliament concerning the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during Modi’s recent visit to Sri Lanka.
The request was made by Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake on June 19, citing a directive from the Prime Minister’s Office.
The question had been posed by Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) MP Nizam Kariyappar to Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
Kariyappar sought full disclosure of projects approved under the MoU, specifically those to be implemented in the Eastern Province with Indian assistance.
He also noted that earlier requests for this information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act had yielded limited results.
The Presidential Secretariat previously claimed it did not possess the relevant documents.
A subsequent RTI request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was met with the response that the information could not be disclosed without prior permission from the Indian government.
