The Farmers’ Struggle Movement has slammed the government for failing to resolve the ongoing fertilizer crisis, warning that continued inaction could force nationwide farmer protests.

Speaking at a press conference in Nugegoda yesterday (21), National Organiser of the Movement, Wimal Waththuhewa said that despite being in power for over eight months, the government has made no meaningful intervention, with both Yala and Maha seasons having passed without timely fertilizer distribution.

He also raised concerns about substandard fertilizer in the market and accused authorities of ignoring repeated warnings.

Waththuhewa highlighted a recent raid in Siripura, Polonnaruwa, where low-quality fertilizer was seized, but the main suspect remains free while casual workers have been remanded.

The National Fertilizer Secretariat was also criticised for failing to act despite its legal responsibility under the Fertilizer Control Act.

Waththuhewa urged the government to arrest those behind the fertilizer scam and provide a swift, sustainable solution, warning that failure to do so would lead to mass mobilisation by farmer groups.
