Deputy Agriculture Minister Namal Karunarathne has announced that the government will import high-quality bovine semen in a bid to enhance the country’s dairy herd, instead of importing live cattle.

Speaking at the launch of the National Livestock Resource Plan in Colombo on Monday, Karunaratne said the Department of Agriculture has formulated a programme aimed at producing over 15,000 superior-grade dairy cattle through artificial insemination.

The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen local milk production and modernise livestock development, Karunarathne said.
