Govt to lease underutilized state lands to private sector

Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Samantha Viddyarathna announced that underutilized government-owned estates are set to be leased to the private sector.

Speaking during the ministry’s expenditure debate in Parliament today (14), he said:

“The government is prepared to address the challenges facing plantation crops. There have been planning errors that could lead to a decline in coconut production.

If political factors are not managed properly, these issues cannot be resolved. We have capable officers, but without the right policies and good management, progress in these sectors will be difficult.

We are currently developing a ten-year plan aimed at revitalizing the coconut industry.

In addition, we are formulating a national plantation policy, which will be presented to the cabinet. This long-term plan is crucial for the future of the coconut industry.”
