Mahesh Perera has been removed from his role as Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka’s Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) following the emergence of critical findings in a recent audit report.

Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy, Waruna Sri Dhanapala, said that the decision came after several issues were uncovered during an internal audit.

Perera was reportedly given a chance to respond to the allegations before the dismissal was finalised.

The Cabinet approved a proposal in May to abolish the existing Information and Communication Technology Agency and to draft legislation to establish a new Digital Economy Authority.

Accordingly, the Cabinet approved a proposal presented by President Dissanayake, in his capacity as the Minister of Digital Economy, to establish a fully Government-owned company named “GovTech (Pvt) Limited” as an independent institution with the necessary powers.
