Indian fishermen continue to poach in Sri Lankan waters

The Sri Lanka Navy seized 05 Indian fishing boats and apprehended 32 Indian fishermen while they were poaching in Sri Lankan waters, during a special operation conducted in the sea area north of Mannar recently.

These Indian fishermen were arrested during a search conducted by naval officers of the North Central and Northern Naval Commands.

Mannar fishermen had informed the Navy on several occasions that Indian fishermen were damaging their nets while poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

As a result, the Navy continues to conduct regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices of foreign fishing boats, taking into account the impact of those practices on the livelihood of local fishermen.

The Navy handed over the Indian fishing boats and fishermen to the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar for further investigations.

The Navy has held 18 Indian fishing boats and apprehended 131 Indian fishermen for poaching in Sri Lankan waters, thus far in 2025.
