The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken the unusual step of suspending five magistrates from their judicial duties within the past week.

Among those barred are Moratuwa Magistrate Thilina Gamagē, Mahiyanganaya Additional District Judge Rangani Gamagē, and three newly appointed probationary magistrates who are yet to complete their probationary period.

The JSC, chaired by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, includes Supreme Court Justice Mahinda Samayawardhena among its members.

However, a key vacancy remains following the retirement of Justice Gamini Amarasekara, with the Constitutional Council yet to appoint a replacement.

High Court Judge Prasanna Alwis continues to serve as Secretary to the Commission.
