Sri Lanka suffered the greatest damage in the past 76 years due to the actions of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), United National Party (UNP) Deputy General Secretary and former minister Harin Fernando said.
Fernando made the remarks while speaking at the opposition’s “Maha Jana Handa” (Voice of the People) rally in Nugegoda yesterday (21), where he addressed supporters on the country’s political and historical challenges.
Recalling the 1971 insurrection and the 1988-89 violent period, Fernando said the JVP had inflicted severe harm on Sri Lanka, undermining development efforts.
“Every successive government implemented ambitious development programmes, but these were sabotaged by protest campaigns. The country was not allowed to move forward,” he said.
Fernando added that the public is aware of the damage and would not allow such disruptions to continue.
He called for a change in government, stressing the opposition’s commitment to its political struggle.
“We cannot allow the people to be misled any longer. Even if ten of us are imprisoned, we will continue our struggle for the people,” he said.
