A rice mill owner has made a profit of at least Rs. 500 million due to the government’s decision to increase the rice control price by Rs. 10, former Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amarweera said.

He alleged that some mill owners have earned a profit of about Rs. 1 billion due to this increase.

Amaraweera said that there is a need to increase the price in this way since those businessmen have spent hundreds of millions of rupees on political parties and for their campaigns.

He also blamed the government for not managing the rice stocks properly.

“All reports indicate that the country’s annual rice requirement is 2.4 million metric tons and about 3 million metric tons were produced, and that it has not been possible to manage it due to the incompetence of the government,” Amaraweera added.
