Farmers in the Rajarata region are facing severe challenges as they struggle to sell their harvests, with traditional pumpkin cultivators among the hardest hit.
Reports indicate that the price of pumpkins has fallen sharply, with a kilogramme currently fetching only Rs. 20 to Rs. 50, leaving many farmers in financial distress.
The crisis is mirrored among big onion farmers, especially those working under the Alahara Agrarian Scheme in the Polonnaruwa District.
Villages including Ikiriwewa, Gangeyaya, Jayasiripura, Nikapitiya, Sarubima, and Batuhena have been grappling with the inability to secure a fair price for their onion harvests.
Farmers warn that the continued lack of adequate market prices for essential local produce could have long-term economic consequences for the region’s agriculture sector, highlighting the urgent need for intervention to stabilize crop prices.
