The iconic wild tusker ‘Bhathiya’ passed away early this morning after a valiant battle for survival.

Despite round-the-clock care and tireless efforts by wildlife officers and veterinary experts, the majestic elephant succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained following a tragic fall and past gunshot wounds.

Bhathiya, a well-known presence in the Nikaweratiya Wildlife Zone, was discovered in a critical state a few days ago after falling into an irrigation well in Polpithigama.

The fall caused extensive trauma, compounding an already precarious condition from an older gunshot injury. The injuries had reportedly led to significant nerve damage, leaving the tusker severely weakened.

A difficult rescue operation was carried out on Monday, led by local wildlife officers and a team of veterinarians. Using heavy machinery including a backhoe and lifting equipment, the team carefully repositioned the ailing elephant, who had been lying partially submerged in water.

Their aim was to relieve pressure and avoid further complications. Villagers and local wildlife officials remained at the scene throughout the night, offering their support and prayers.

Dr. Ashoka Dangalla, who headed the veterinary response team, confirmed yesterday that Bhathiya’s condition was “extremely critical.” Intensive treatment was administered, including intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and strong painkillers, but the damage proved too severe.
