National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), MP Namal Rajapaksa, says that certain investigative bodies are manipulating evidence and misusing legal processes to serve political interests.
Speaking amidst renewed attention on the murder investigation of rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, Rajapaksa raised concerns over recent statements made by the Police Media Spokesperson, particularly those referencing Aruna Vidanagamage, also known as Middeniye Kajja, and his alleged involvement in the case.
He questioned why details from an active investigation, including testimony from Vidanagamage’s widow, were being disclosed publicly rather than presented in court.
Rajapaksa stressed the importance of verifying critical facts cited in the case, including the true identity of the individual mentioned, the woman’s recent residence, and her personal associations.
He insisted that due process must be followed, warning against the use of media briefings to shape public opinion around legal matters.
Rajapaksa also accused the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of attempting to curry favour with the government by relying on unverified or false testimonies.
He noted that such actions risk undermining the credibility of the legal process and called for all investigations to be conducted impartially and free from political interference.
He also expressed concern that the Thajudeen case is being used to build a broader political narrative, suggesting it forms part of a pattern of government-led campaigns framed around weekly themes.
