SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa has refuted allegations that his father, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, sought the intervention of senior Buddhist monks to stop the arrest of family members.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Namal Rajapaksa accused the NPP government of spreading falsehoods to deflect attention from its own failures during its first year in office.

“In an effort to cover up, it has resorted to spreading false claims that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is seeking the help of the Ven. Mahanayaka Theros to prevent the arrest of his family members. This is not just an attack on the former President, but a disgraceful attempt to drag our most respected religious leaders into political mudslinging. Such actions are deeply condemnable,” he said.

Namal Rajapaksa described the allegations as baseless and argued they reveal the Government’s attempts to politicize the police and judiciary to unfairly implicate his family.

“My family and I have consistently faced politically motivated investigations without fear, and we continue to place our full trust in the country’s judicial system without seeking special treatment or favors,” he added.

He further urged the Government to cease misleading the public and focus instead on delivering the promises it made to the people.

Namal Rajapaksa accused the ruling party of resorting to character assassination and politicisation of law enforcement, tactics he associated with the National People’s Power (NPP), as a sign of desperation to cover up its shortcomings.
