Sri Lanka Police claim they were unable to conduct a breathalyzer test on former Speaker and MP Asoka Ranwala following a road accident in Sapugaskanda last week because officers did not have the required equipment.

A senior police official said the Sapugaskanda police had no alternative but to refer Ranwala for a medical examination to determine whether he had been driving under the influence.

Ranwala was arrested on Friday in connection with the incident and later released on bail.

The accident occurred about 7:30 pm on December 11 near the Denimulla junction.

Police said Ranwala’s vehicle first struck a motorcyclist before colliding with a car.

A 25-year-old woman, her 7-month-old infant and the woman’s mother, who were traveling in the car, were injured and admitted to hospital.

The infant was later transferred to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children for further treatment.
