Sri Lanka police say that Anura Vidanagamage, widely known as “Kajja,” who was gunned down in February alongside his two children, had been the vehicle that had followed former Sri Lankan rugby player Wasim Thajudeen’s vehicle moments before the latter was murdered.
Acting Police Spokesman ASP Minura Senarath revealed this at a press briefing in Colombo yesterday, citing fresh evidence obtained during the interrogation of underworld figure “Backhoe Saman.”
Saman, recently arrested in Indonesia, is suspected of orchestrating Kajja’s killing earlier this year.
Kajja’s widow also provided a detailed statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) after being shown CCTV footage from near the Havelock City complex.
The footage shows Thajudeen purchasing a bottle of water shortly before his death.
Kajja’s wife identified the man standing behind Thajudeen in the video as her husband, citing his distinctive posture and long-standing back ailment.
According to her testimony, Kajja entered a vehicle shortly after Thajudeen left the scene.
That vehicle was seen tailing Thajudeen’s car, which was later found wrecked, with Thajudeen’s body inside — a case long suspected to involve foul play and cover-ups.
Kajja himself was fatally shot on 18 February by an unidentified gunman. His two young children, critically injured in the attack, later succumbed to their injuries.
Police say the suspected shooter, now in custody with nine others, confessed to carrying out the contract killing under orders from “Backhoe Saman,” reportedly due to escalating personal debt.
