Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage stated that the reason for the current coconut crisis is the previous government’s failure to properly maintain coconut cultivation.

Addressing the parliament, Hewage said that if a coconut crisis occurs in another five to six years, his government can take responsibility for it.

The Deputy Minister claimed that fertilizer had not been provided to government-owned coconut plantations since 2009.

He alleged that the previous rulers also took steps to divide coconut lands and sell them.
