Leader of the United Republican Front (URF) Patali Champika Ranawaka says the government is protecting large-scale tax evaders and loan defaulters despite repeatedly pledging to crack down on financial misconduct.

Ranawaka said that 4,570 individuals who each owe more than Rs. 10 million in unpaid taxes, along with 90 others owing more than Rs. 1 billion each, have not faced legal action under the current NPP administration.

He alleged that these high-value defaulters remain “fully protected” by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The former minister said the government has chosen to pursue only minor or politically motivated cases, such as those involved in the distribution of spectacles or the publication of newspaper advertisements.

Ranawaka also claimed that individuals who defaulted on loans totaling Rs. 700 billion from the Bank of Ceylon and the People’s Bank continue to operate freely.
