An investigation has been launched into allegations that a National People’s Power (NPP) MP from the Kalutara District verbally abused and threatened a police sergeant over the arrest of an illicit liquor trader in Welipenna.
Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said during the weekly Cabinet media briefing that a probe is underway, adding that “the truth will be revealed soon.”
According to reports, the MP, identified as Sanjeewa Ranasinghe, allegedly berated a police sergeant from the Welipenna Police for apprehending a suspect involved in the illegal liquor trade.
The sergeant later lodged a complaint with the Officer-in-Charge (OIC), alleging that the MP threatened him with a transfer to Vavuniya.
The complaint further states that the MP obtained the sergeant’s mobile number from the OIC and called him directly, accusing the officer of filing false cases.
He also demanded personal details about the sergeant, including his place of residence.
The OIC of Welipenna Police has recorded details of the exchange, including the phone conversations, in the police information book.
A report on the incident has been requested, and a formal inquiry is being conducted by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
Police sources say the inquiry will examine the conduct of the MP and any potential misuse of influence or intimidation of law enforcement personnel.
