An NPP trade union leader has been arrested after being in hiding for three weeks while facing charges of sexual harassment.

OIC of Narahenpita Police Akila informed Colombo additional magistrate Lahiru Silva Ranasinghe on 25 September about the arrest of head of Samastha Lanka Sevaka Sangamaya Named Sendheerage Rohimal (56).

He faces charges of sexually harassing a female unionist of the UNP’s Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya at the SLTB head office in Narahenpita, where she works as an accounts clerk.

The victim, Janaki Shyamali Silva, lodged a complaint on 31 August alleging that Rohimal had threatened and sexually harassed her soon after a meeting between the TUs and the SLTB Chairman two days earlier.

The lawyer for the defendant claimed in court the woman had threatened his client and a complaint has been filed with Maharagama Police.

Considering an appeal for bail, the additional magistrate ordered a surety of Rs. 200,000 and the case is to be taken up again on 24 November.
