One in ten Sri Lankans affected by mental illness, says Health Ministry

Around 10% of Sri Lanka’s population is living with some form of mental illness, the country’s Ministry of Health has revealed.

Speaking at a national event marking World Mental Health Day on Wednesday (08), Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena said that approximately 2% of Sri Lankans are affected by severe mental health disorders.

He aslo said that these conditions have significantly contributed to an increase in suicides.
