More than 1,200 unprotected railway crossings remain in operation across Sri Lanka, posing a significant risk to public safety, according to information presented before the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA).

When COPA member and Parliamentarian Chandana Sooriyaarachchi questioned officials on the alarming frequency of such accidents, General Manager of Railways, Dhammika Jayasundara, acknowledged the existence of approximately 1,200 unsafe crossings that lack protective barriers or warning systems.

The discussion highlighted growing concerns over the increasing number of accidents occurring at railway crossings, including those equipped with safety mechanisms.
