Sri Lanka’s Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Saroja Paulraj, has revealed that more than 300 children, many engaged in domestic servitude or forced into street begging, have been rescued across the country within the past month.
Among them, 26 were found in the Colombo district alone.
The Minister stated that the rescues were carried out based on intelligence provided by the National Child Protection Authority.
“These children will be placed in the care of legal guardians capable of ensuring their safety and welfare,” she said.
She added that the government is committed to ensuring all rescued children are reintegrated into education and provided with the necessary support to continue their schooling.
Legal proceedings will also be initiated against individuals found to have exploited children as domestic workers or street beggars.
