More than 85,000 people remain sheltered in 878 safe centres established across Sri Lanka following last week’s severe flooding and landslides, the National Disaster Management Centre said.
The death toll from the disaster has risen to 639, while 193 people are still reported missing, according to the latest figures.
Although floodwaters have receded in most areas, authorities say cleanup efforts remain far from complete.
In Peliyagoda, residents reported that seven days have passed since waters subsided, yet assistance for clearing debris and accumulated garbage has been inadequate.
Some residents also said they have not received the Rs. 25,000 cleaning subsidy distributed through Grama Niladharis to support households affected by the disaster.
