The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has condemned the alleged assault on Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) member Sandamali Uduwaduge of the United National Party (UNP), calling it a serious threat to democratic norms and political freedoms.
The incident took place on Monday (16) near councillor Uduwaduge’s office.
The election monitoring body highlighted that political expression is a right enshrined in Sri Lanka’s Constitution and warned that attacks of this nature undermine public confidence in the democratic process.
PAFFREL further stressed that such incidents serve to intimidate political actors and could have a chilling effect on female participation in politics.
Calling for swift legal action, PAFFREL urged law enforcement authorities to identify and apprehend the perpetrators without delay or political bias.
The organisation also reiterated the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of all elected officials, regardless of party affiliation.
