The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategic Development has launched a detailed review into the emergency coal purchases and annual procurement plans undertaken by Lanka Coal Company (Private) Limited, following concerns over procurement procedures and transparency.

The matter was taken up at a meeting held in Parliament on 17 October, chaired by MP S.M. Marikkar.

Representatives from the Ministry of Power and Energy, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Sri Lanka, and the Department of the Auditor General attended the session.

Committee members focused on the tender procedures followed by Lanka Coal Company prior to 2022 and the amendments introduced thereafter.

During the discussions, Chair S.M. Marikkar instructed officials to submit a comprehensive report detailing all data related to emergency coal purchases made before 2022 for further review.

The committee also examined the current coal stock levels, their expected duration, and the quantities planned for upcoming procurements, in light of the country’s energy needs and ongoing supply challenges.

MPs Nalin Bandara, Jagath Withana, and Asitha Niroshan also attended.
