Patients face increasing risk of side effects from antibiotics

Patients face an increasing risk of side effects from antibiotics due to the absence of national antibiotics and medicines policies, said Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa.

The head of the union of doctors for medical and civil rights said Sri Lanka has yet to document the fatalities from antibiotics use, whereas research has shown an annual death rate of nearly 700,000 across the world.

However, there are increasing instances of local clinical experiences of deaths due to no response to antibiotics, he said.

A main hurdle against a formulation of a national medicines policy is that doctors themselves are not positively supporting it, added Dr. Sanjeewa.
