The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya has taken a decision to suspend the convening of the General Students’ Union and Faculty Student Unions.

According to a statement issued by the university, the General Students’ Union and Faculty Student Unions have been suspended from gathering students, holding meetings and addressing students on any matter within or outside the University of Peradeniya.

The Vice-Chancellor has emphasized that this suspension will be strictly enforced for a week from today (17) and that disciplinary action will be taken against all those who act contrary to it.

However, expressing their views on this matter, the Inter-University Students’ Federation stated that since such incidents have now become very common within the University of Peradeniya, it is very clear that student freedom is currently being suppressed within the university.

They also point out that the establishment of student unions is a right granted to students through the University Act itself, and the right to assemble, speak, and express opinions are considered fundamental rights even by the Constitution.

IUSF also states that such violations of democracy, which are carried out under the pretext of exercising the powers vested in the Vice-Chancellor, cannot be tolerated at all.
