Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) have uncovered an illegal operation in which flood-damaged rice, deemed unfit for human consumption, was being processed and released to the market.
Pradeep Boralessa, President of the Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors’ Union, said the operation was discovered in the Harispattuwa area of Kandy District, where authorities seized 1,000 kilograms of the contaminated rice.
Suspects involved in the scheme were apprehended at the scene.
Boralessa said PHIs are actively monitoring the country for similar fraudulent activities and urged businesses to refrain from such practices.
“We remind the public to be cautious when purchasing rice, particularly during this period,” he said.
