A chilling assassination plot targeting notorious underworld figure, ‘Harak Kata’, was foiled following a police investigation that uncovered a plan to kill him inside a courtroom using a contract killer disguised as a journalist.
The Peliyagoda Crimes Division sources said that the notorious gang led by Kehelbaddara Padme orchestrated the scheme, deploying a hitman posing as a media professional to get close to Harak Kata during his court transfer.
Key information emerged during questioning of ‘Gampaha Pas Deva,’ a reputed underworld boss and theoretician to the gang, who provided critical details about the plan.
Recognising the threat, police doubled security around Harak Kata during his recent court appearance last week.
The investigation further disclosed that an earlier assassination attempt inside the courtroom to kill another underworld leader, Sanjiva of Ganemulla, involved a contract killer disguised as a lawyer, reportedly assigned by Kehelbaddara Padme and Commando Salintha.
Sources say the gang exploited the free access journalists have near the accused during court proceedings, choosing a disguised media worker as the perfect cover for the attack.
The probe is being led by Chief Inspector Linton de Silva, under the supervision of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjiva Dharmaratne, Deputy Inspector General Nishantha Soisa, and Crimes Division Director Rohan Olugala.
