Postal workers and Postmaster General clash over overtime allegations

Postal trade unions across Sri Lanka have announced plans to wear black armbands on October 9 in protest against recent remarks by the Postmaster General (PMG) that postal workers illegally claimed overtime payments.

The dispute was sparked by comments made by Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara at an event in Haputale, where he alleged that postal employees had claimed millions of rupees in overtime without properly using the fingerprint attendance system. He also hinted at other irregularities within the department.

Leaders of the postal unions have strongly condemned the PMG’s remarks. G. G. C. Niroshana, President of the Postal and Telecommunication Officers’ Association, described the allegations as unfair and premature, pointing out that no formal investigation had been conducted before the PMG made his claims.

Similarly, Chinthaka Bandara, Co-Convener of the Joint Postal Trade Union Front, voiced serious concern over the accusations, emphasising that the workers were being unfairly targeted without due process.
