Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has expressed strong support for India’s long-standing bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), describing it as a necessary acknowledgment of global power dynamics and international political realities.
Speaking to India’s ANI news agency during his ongoing visit to New Delhi, Premadasa said India’s inclusion in the UNSC “would be a recognition of the practical realities of international politics.”
“Years ago, I was among the first to openly advocate for India being granted a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. I will continue to support that effort. You cannot discard or marginalise India — its representation at the UNSC reflects the world’s geopolitical realities,” he said.
Premadasa’s remarks come as India intensifies its diplomatic campaign for UNSC reform, arguing that the Council’s composition no longer reflects the balance of power in the 21st century, particularly among emerging economies and developing nations.
Responding to a question on Sri Lanka’s position in the context of the India–China dynamic, Premadasa stressed that Colombo places great importance on its “special strategic relationship” with New Delhi, while maintaining balanced ties with all other global partners.
