Professor Buddhi Marambe of the Faculty of Agriculture’s Crop Science Department of the University of Peradeniya has revealed the main factors that have led to the rice and coconut crises in the country.

The senior professor, who has served as a consultant to the World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization and World Food Programme, observed that this problem has arisen due to the government not being able to utilise accurate data.

In a discussion on a YouTube channel, he pointed out that institutions such as the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Census and Statistics, which provide the government with such sensitive information, should pay more attention to this matter.

He said that these figures have caused the statements made by the government’s political leaders on various platforms seem irrational.

He has also pointed out that if the rulers fail to understand this situation correctly, serious problems may arise in the future, and warned of an unexpected increase in the prices of consumables such as rice and coconuts.
