The office of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has denied recent allegations regarding the cost of his official visit to the University of Wolverhampton in September 2023, calling the claims “incorrect and inaccurate.”
In a special statement issued today (27), Wickremesinghe’s office rejected reports circulating in the media and claims made in police complaints, asserting that the accusations surrounding the overseas travel expenses are unfounded.
The statement said that the matter is being reviewed on legal grounds and that further clarification will be issued in line with legal counsel.
“While denying these accusations, as being made mala fide, further clarifications will be made in accordance with legal advice,” the statement added.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has informed the court that a special investigation has been launched into a private overseas trip allegedly undertaken by former President Wickremesinghe using government funds.
Police further said that approximately Rs. 16.9 million in government funds were spent on this visit and a group of ten individuals is said to have accompanied the former President on this trip.
