A system should be established where crop-damaging animals, such as wild boars and monkeys, are taken to an island and provided with food daily, Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage said.
The Deputy Minister made these remarks at a meeting held at the Ambalangoda Divisional Secretariat’s auditorium.
“A nationwide census of crop-damaging wild animals will be conducted on the 15th of this month. Between thirty and fifty percent of crop damage is caused by these wild animals. When people who ridicule this issue are asked for a solution, they have no answers. There is also a problem with dogs. The issue with crop-damaging wild animals, such as wild boars and monkeys, is that we should take them to an island and feed them daily, similar to an alms-giving tradition. We need a system in place to feed these animals daily. Whatever the solution is, we need a plan for addressing this problem,” he said.
Hewage also said that if there is a better solution to the problems caused by these wild animals, the government is ready to accept it.
