Shani to take over Lasantha murder probe

Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara is to take over the investigation into the murder of prominent journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, according to reports.

Probes into high-profile killings are to be brought under investigators who had been relieved of duty in the Criminal Investigations Department by the previous regimes in order to disrupt the enforcement of the law.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Police announced on February 11 that it will establish a new bureau, the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), aimed at handling various criminal investigations.

The police said that SSP Abeysekara will serve as its Director.
