SLPP secures control of Sri Lanka’s richest multipurpose cooperative society

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has clinched majority control of the Kotapola Multipurpose Cooperative Society, widely regarded as the richest cooperative society in the country, following recent elections.

The party won 42 out of 100 seats, while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) secured 18 seats.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP)-led alliance and smaller parties each won four seats, and the National People’s Power (NPP) captured 32 seats.

The Kotapola Multipurpose Cooperative Society holds extensive assets, including tea and coconut plantations and other commercial properties spanning hundreds of acres.

A SLPP spokesman alleged that government authorities had attempted to use various means to retain influence over the cooperative
