Animal welfare groups in Sri Lanka have condemned the alleged confinement and starvation of monkeys in cages in the Thumpane area of the Central Province.
The Animal Welfare Coalition of Sri Lanka said that a video circulating on social media shows numerous monkeys, including some dead and others close to death, held without food for several days.
The organisation described the situation as “state-sponsored cruelty.”
In a letter to Central Province Governor Professor Sarath Abeykoon, they called for the immediate release of the monkeys and urged local authorities, including Pradeshiya Sabhas, to free any captured animals without delay.
The group said it was deeply shocked that such inhumane treatment has reportedly recurred in Thumpane.
