Sri Lanka deports 85 Chinese nationals over criminal offences

A total of 85 Chinese nationals convicted of criminal offences, including cybercrimes, were deported from Sri Lanka this morning via a special SriLankan Airlines flight, according to the Officer-in-Charge of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).

The individuals had been arrested by Sri Lankan security forces while residing in the country and were later remanded following judicial proceedings.

After their convictions in local courts, they were held at the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s Detention Center in Welisara, pending deportation.

The group was transported under tight security in five buses to the airport and escorted to the aircraft.

The deportation operation involved a significant security presence, with 85 police officers, officials from the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and 172 SriLankan Airlines security personnel accompanying the group.
