Sri Lanka: Over 1000 children diagnosed with cancer annually

Health authorities report that over 1000 children in the country are diagnosed with cancer each year.

Dr. Buddhi Somawardana, blood cancer and bone marrow transplant specialist at the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital said that among these cases, 30% suffer from leukemia while 25% are affected by central nervous system-related cancers.

Approximately 40,000 cancer patients are reported annually in the country of which around 4,000 are diagnosed with blood cancer.

Dr. Somawardana also noted that one-third of all cancers can be prevented.
