Sri Lanka vital to U.S. economy, says Deputy Minister

Deputy Minister of Land and Irrigation, Susil Ranasinghe, has claimed that in the present global economic context, the United States needs Sri Lanka just as much as Sri Lanka needs the United States.

Speaking at a public event organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Deputy Minister Ranasinghe said that despite the U.S. introducing tariffs on Sri Lankan goods, there is still room for negotiation, and Sri Lanka is actively pursuing it.

Ranasinghe asserted that Sri Lanka is beginning to “lift its head” economically and that this upward trajectory should be clearly communicated to international partners, particularly Washington.

While Sri Lanka’s export sector has been hit hard by a 30% U.S. tariff, competitor nations such as Vietnam and Indonesia have successfully negotiated lower tariff rates of 20% and 19% respectively, placing additional pressure on local industries.
