Sri Lanka’s passport has dropped six places in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, falling to 97th in the latest global rankings released on 11 September, a sharp reversal following modest gains earlier this year.
The country, which had climbed to 91st position in the July mid-year update, now ranks even lower than in 2024, when it stood at 96th.
Sri Lankan passport holders currently enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 41 destinations, down from 42 previously.
The decline places Sri Lanka alongside Iran in joint 97th position out of 105 ranked countries, according to the index — widely considered a benchmark for travel freedom.
The Henley Passport Index, based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), evaluates 199 passports against 227 destinations worldwide.
At the top of the 2025 rankings, Singapore retains first place, followed closely by South Korea and Japan. Afghanistan remains the lowest-ranked passport globally.
