Tamils took the streets in Point Pedro, Jaffna calling for the immediate removal of army and navy camps in the area.

Regional reporters said that the march, organised on Monday (25) under the theme “Save Point Pedro”, began near the port and proceeded to the Point Pedro Divisional Secretariat, where protesters handed over a letter outlining their demands.

They alleged that the navy had forcibly occupied the Point Pedro lighthouse and its surrounding land, while the army had taken over land that housed the 150-year-old post office and the Magistrate’s Court.

The protesters further said that the two institutions are forced to continue operations on alternative premises as steps have not been taken to release the land even sixteen years after the end of the war.

The demonstration was led by Point Pedro Municipal Council Chairman Douglas Paul and supported by former Tamil MPs, residents of the area, and members of the fishing community.

While the Tamil National People’s Front holds control of the council, regional reporters noted that the protest was joined by all council members except those representing the National People’s Power.
