Teacher shortage hits schools hard

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has called for immediate measures to tackle the critical shortage of over 42,000 teachers in national and provincial schools across the country.

Addressing a meeting with the Cabinet-appointed Task Force on Digital Education Transformation (Grades 6–13), the Prime Minister stressed the urgency of bridging the learning gap and proposed the accelerated introduction of digital learning systems within the next six months as a key interim solution.

The Task Force discussion, held at the Prime Minister’s Office, focused on policy planning for digital transformation in education, addressing infrastructure disparities, and ensuring inclusivity for students with disabilities.

Dr. Amarasuriya emphasised that a coordinated, multi-sectoral effort is vital to implementing these reforms and ensuring equal access to quality education for all students.
