Threats by drunks and thugs have forced the indefinite closure of the regional hospital at Dayagama in Nuwara Eliya.
The district’s director of health services has taken the step, pending police protection for the hospital’s female health officers.
Speaking to the media with regard to the matter at the director’s office yesterday (23) were the district secretary of the GMOA Jagath Dissanayake and medical officer in charge of the hospital Minosha Welikanna.
They alleged the police failed to provide protection they sought following threats by drunks accompanying patients to the hospital.
The most recent incident happened on 20 October, when a patient dissatisfied with the treatments had an exchange of words with the medical officers, with death threats issued.
A person accompanying him attacked a hospital driver who tried to intervene.
In that night, lit firecrackers were thrown at the hostel of the female medical officers.
On a complaint, police arrested a suspect, who continued to threaten the medical officers from the police cell.
