The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) says that three individuals have died as a result of incidents caused by the prevailing adverse weather conditions affecting multiple parts of the island.
The fatalities were reported from Thambuttegama, Peradeniya, and Ruwanwella, where heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides have disrupted daily life and endangered public safety.
In Thambuttegama, located in the Anuradhapura District, a man was swept away by a flash flood on Sunday (19) following intense rains in the area. Despite rescue efforts, he was later found deceased.
In Peradeniya, tragedy struck when a 72-year-old man was killed after being buried under a landslide. According to authorities, the victim was walking near a canal when a nearby earth embankment collapsed, trapping him underneath.
The third incident occurred in Ruwanwella, where a 54-year-old man reportedly fell into a canal and drowned while attempting to cross it using a footbridge during heavy rainfall.
According to the DMC, the extreme weather has affected over 500 individuals from 144 families across three districts.
Emergency teams have been mobilised to provide relief and assess potential risks in vulnerable areas.
