Thilina Sampath, also known as ‘Valas Kata’, a close aide of notorious underworld leader Manudinu Padmasiri Perera alias Kehelbaddara Padme, suffered serious injuries after attempting to escape by jumping from the third floor of the Peliyagoda Crimes Division building.

He was rushed to Colombo National Hospital on August 09.

According to police, Valas Kata assaulted a police officer guarding him when he was taken outside the prison for a toilet break before pushing the officer and leaping from the 27-foot-high building. Miraculously, he survived but sustained multiple fractures to both legs and his left arm.

Valas Kata is currently under treatment, with hospital sources confirming he is out of life-threatening danger.

The Peliyagoda Crimes Division has launched a wide-ranging investigation following Valas Kata’s revelations about arms smuggling activities allegedly orchestrated by Kehelbaddara Padme.

The inquiry focuses on a July 19 incident where two men, suspected to be army personnel, reportedly handed over T-56 rifles, magazines, and hand grenades in a military vehicle to Valas Kata.

These weapons are said to have been destined for use in targeted killings.

Police sources said that investigations are ongoing, with support from the military, but the facts have yet to be fully verified.

At the time of the incident, four police officers were assigned to guard Valas Kata and other underworld suspects.
