United National Party (UNP) Chairman and former Cabinet Minister Wajira Abeywardena has stirred surprise — and public curiosity — after revealing that he does not maintain a single bank account in his name.

The disclosure was made at a wedding in Colombo recently, where a group of politicians reportedly discussed the role of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

According to Abeywardena, he had been summoned by the Commission in the past and, during questioning, declared that he had no bank accounts.

This revelation, he said, left CIABOC officials visibly stunned.

“When they asked why, I simply told them, ‘If I don’t see it as a problem, you shouldn’t either,’” Abeywardena recounted — a remark that drew laughter from those nearby.

Guests at the function reportedly reacted with disbelief, some asking whether it was truly possible for a long-serving public official not to possess even a single account.

The answer, repeated several times that evening, was: “Yes, I really do not.”
