Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe will continue to receive medical treatment at Colombo National Hospital over the coming days, his office announced on Tuesday.

The statement expressed gratitude to those who have supported him in the struggle against “constitutional dictatorship.”

Wickremesinghe’s office also said that the former president plans to address the public once his treatment is completed.

The United National Party (UNP), has also expressed its gratitude to the legal community and public for their vocal support during this turbulent period.

UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene specifically praised Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and the opposition for their commitment to defending democracy.

Wijewardene highlighted the cross-party solidarity shown by senior politicians, including former presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maithripala Sirisena, and Chandrika Kumaratunga.

UNP Assistant Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam also acknowledged the efforts of more than 500 lawyers who offered legal assistance following Wickremesinghe’s arrest.

“On behalf of the UNP and other parties, I thank everyone who stood by us with such dedication. This was not a defence of corruption or wrongdoing, but a stand for justice. We placed our trust in the independence of the judiciary and that trust was not misplaced,” he added.
