The World Bank has raised serious concerns over the Sri Lankan government’s implementation of Aswesuma, the country’s flagship Social Security Programme, citing the lack of updated and accurate data as a critical flaw.
During a recent meeting attended by Members of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Finance, Planning and Economic Development, the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Economic Development and International Relations, and officials from the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies, World Bank representatives stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive social security data system, Parliament sources confirmed.
The World Bank emphasised that merely including citizens’ information in the database does not automatically qualify them as Aswesuma beneficiaries.
Accurate verification and analysis of data are essential to ensure that truly poor and vulnerable individuals receive the intended support.
World Bank officials also highlighted that establishing a robust data system represents a productive investment for the country and pledged to provide technical support and international expertise to strengthen the programme. They underscored the importance of continuous updating of the system to maintain transparency, efficiency, and fairness in the distribution of benefits.
