A 110-year-old farmer from Karandeniya has been officially recognized as the oldest living man in Sri Lanka.
The National Secretariat for Elders confirmed the status of Bolanda Hakuru Meniel after verifying his birthdate of 4 June 1915, as recorded on his national identity card.
Meniel, a resident of the 95A Agulugalla Grama Niladhari Division, has become a subject of national interest due to his remarkable longevity and enduring health.
Leading a very healthy life, Meniel has dedicated his entire existence to agriculture. His livelihood has been intertwined with nature, with his life spent in farming and cinnamon cultivation. He is literate, having studied up to the 5th standard.
He is an indispensable figure at any religious almsgiving or Pirith chanting ceremony in the village. He actively participated in lay Pirith chanting until he was ninety-five years old.
Family members mention that Meniel goes to work in his garden early in the morning.
Meniel is a father to nine children.
Even at his advanced age, he has been able to live a healthy life without any serious illnesses, according to the family.
As a recipient of the Centenarian Allowance from the National Secretariat for Elders, Meniel receives immense love and care from his family. Although his wife passed away some time ago, he lives happily, enjoying the boundless affection of his children and grandchildren.
He still possesses a good memory and, without any major ailments, continues to hum old folk songs, a testament to his sharp recollection.
Recently, the Galle District Secretary, W.A. Dharmasiri, visited Meniel at his residence with gifts to inquire after his well-being.
